DOC
I HAVE to tell you about Doc now because he amazes me so much. As you may, or may not know, Doc was a hunting beagle, used to living in a 4x6 chain link kennel with a dog house. There were 3 such kennels side by side and the entire unit was surrounded by a wood privacy fence. Not much of a world to view every day. When the previous owner wanted newer, younger dogs he tried to find homes for his dogs rather than euthanise them. I took Benny first at age 10. Benny passed away at age 15. I took Doc next at age 12. Benny and Doc hated each other and got into fights each time they passed each other, which was a lot. Before I took them I required the man to have them neutered, which he did, and I think after a time that helped Benny and Doc begin a new relationship. They must have know they had a special connection because as time went by they did everything together and even curled up together at night. There was no more fighting. Doc is now 17 going on 18. Last week he experienced sudden violent vomiting that lasted all night long and ended with large amounts of bright red blood. Subsequently he developed diahrrhea that also ended up as blood. Of course the trip to the vet the next day was anxious, as Doc has a history or adenocarcinoma of the intestines from 2 years ago. The lab work showed no signs of cancer, liver, or pancreatic disorders. The x-rays showed no signs of bowel blockage. The ultrasound showed a cyst on a kidney. We decided Doc probably had a bleeding stomach ulcer. He is an especially hard dog to feed. We have to alternate his diet with chicken, steak, bacon, and a few choice dog treats and begging to get him to eat. A lot of things will upset his stomach. After giving him the ulcer meds for a day he showed improvement and I began to get excitied. However, within 3 days, he could not stand and walk, but I noticed he was holding his back left leg up and it seemed to hurt to walk on it. I made him rest his leg for 2 days, much to his dismay as he still wanted to wander. I had to agree with my Mom and husband that he must be failing and it might be time for him to go. However, the next morning, he arose and could walk on all 4's again. He needs to regain strength but I think theres more life to live left in him. What a dog. Doc lost his fight on Jan. 21, 2010I miss so much, but know he is with his friends that left us earlier and we will see him again at "The Rainbow Bridge".
